Three personalities face the First World War with a variety of reactions. Dan Fuselli is an Italian-American with a cheerful conformist attitude. Chrisfield is an Indiana farm boy who is repulsed by the horrors of war, but advances to the rank of corporal in spite of himself. John Andrews is a hypersensitive recent graduate of Harvard who eventually escapes to Paris in order to study music and begin composing a symphonic work.
